Dealing with Dog ‘Home Alone’ Anxiety Complex

Home Alone Complex

It is estimated that three in five dogs suffer severe anxiety when you leave them alone in the house. It is a startling statistic and demonstrates the extent to which dogs are highly social animals.

If your pet suffers with being left alone, there are a number of training techniques to help deal with the problem.

Firstly, always ensure to take your dog a good long walk before leaving them alone in the house. This will burn out their nervous energy and help them relax when you leave.

Do not make a big song and dance when you leave. Don’t apologies or lavish them with hugs. It shows the dog that your leaving is significant and something to be worked up about. Avoid eye contact and slip away with drawing much attention.

If you feel the need to say good bye, get it out the way in plenty of time before you leave.

Dogs can sense negative moods, so be positive, act as the leader of the pack and be assured around your dog. It will help them feel more at ease waiting for your return.

If your dog is really struggling, train over a period of time by leaving them alone for short but regular periods. Start with 5 minutes bursts, working up to a few hours. This should help them deal with being home alone and not get anxious or be upset.

The above highlights the importance of the owner projecting positive vibes to their pet. If you can manage this then your dog will become more relaxed and maybe even enjoy the peace and quiet!
