Training Mature Dogs

Mature Training

Can you teach an old dog new tricks?

It is completely different training puppies and adult canines. Youngsters enjoy the thrill of new things and have an active capacity to learn. Mature dogs on the other hand are often set in their ways and may rebel against attempts to install unwanted commands.

When initiating training with an older canine, it is often wise to find out the background to the dog and if they have experienced problems with previous owners. It is usually fairly easy to establish if the dog has any training – often by the location of the toilet habits!

Building Trust

Unlike puppies, older dogs may not (although there are many exceptions) share the innocent approach that all humans are good. Win their trust with plenty of positive affection and reassuring. It also useful to talk to them regularly as although they cannot understand it builds the perception that you interact directly and will benefit training.

Getting Started

Consider the training to be a blank canvas. It may seem tedious but it builds good practices to reinforce the basics; sit, stay and here.

These are the building blocks and will be used to extend their understanding and discipline with more comprehensive commands down the line. Repeat them regularly and reward with a treat initially before reducing.

Stay Calm

It can be frustrating and test of your patience but remain cool and understand that it is as hard for a dog to learn as a human later in life. It is finally noting that canines continue to learn from other dogs throughout their life so don’t avoid socialising and allow your dog to assess good behaviours from others.
